As the Council in 1947 were the Local Supervising Authority
under the Midwives Acts the Public Health Department had very
early information from the midwives practising in the area of any
discharge from the eyes occurring in an infant within twentyone days
of birth. In such cases home nursing was provided by the Wimbledon
District Nursing Association. This ensured that the doctor's instructions
were properly and regularly carried out.
The advent of sulphonamides and penicillin has removed a very
great deal of the anxiety which was formerly associated with cases
of ophthalmia neonatorum. The four cases notified during the year
were slight and were all adequately treated at home.
