Petroleum Acts.—Seventy-three applications were received
for permission to keep petroleum, 64 being for the renewal of
existing licences, and 9 for new ones.
Two hundred and forty-one inspections were made of the
various premises in respect of which licences had been issued.
During the last few years the provision of underground
tanks for the storage of petroleum has been increasing. The
installation of these tanks calls for considerable amount of
supervision, both during the progress of the work, and on
its completion.
Prior to a tank being installed, plans are submitted,
carefully scrutinised, and if found in accordance with the
regulations, permission is given for the work to be executed
The ground is excavated and after inspection, a concrete
box is formed, into which the tank is lowered. An air
pressure test is then applied, and if the result is satisfactory,
the space surrounding the tank is filled in with either sand or
concrete. The pump is then erected and the various pipes
connected to it. These also are subjected to a test, and if
found to be in order, the necessary filling in is allowed to
be proceeded with.
On completion of the work a final test is made and a
licence issued.
Diseases of Animals Acts, 1894 to 1925.
Swine Fever.—No outbreak of this disease was notified
in the district during the year, but during the examination of
the carcases of two pigs killed at a local slaughter-house, it
was found that one of the animals had been affected with
