3. INFANT MORTALITY.
The deaths of infants under one year of age were:—
Males. | Females. | Totals. | |
---|---|---|---|
Legitimate | 42 | 34 | 76 |
Illegitimate | 1 | 1 | 2 |
Total | 43 | 35 | 78 |
The death-rates of infants under one year of age per 1,000 live
births when calculated on the totals given by the Registrar-General
in paragraph 2 are therefore:—
Legitimate, 39. Illegitimate, 44. Total, 39.
The rates during the quinquennium have been as follows:—
Legitimate. | Illegitimate. | Total | |
---|---|---|---|
1930 | 39 | 44 | 39 |
1929 | 54 | 84 | 53 |
1928 | 49 | 93 | 51 |
1927 | 49 | 222 | 52 |
1926 | 42 | 122 | 45 |
Thus 1930 has established a new low record, and another pleasing
feature is the remarkably low illegitimate Infant Mortality rate,
showing that during 1930, at any rate, these unfortunate children
were as well cared for as their legitimate contemporaries.
It is a matter of regret that in view of the difficulty of reconciling
the Registrar-General's figure with locally registered and notified
births it is not possible to give accurate Birth and Infant Mortality
rates by wards.
The following table shows the causes of death of children under one
year of age during 1930:—
