The number of Council houses in course of erection at the end of
1930 was 78 at the "Spion Kop" site, while a further scheme during
the current year will provide another 104 houses on the same site.
The following table shows the total number of houses erected during the past five years:—

The preponderance of "private enterprise" houses during 1929
and 1930 will be noticed. These are mostly freehold "hirepurchase"
houses ranging from £665 to £1,050—£25 deposit and
25s. per week repayment being the average for a house costing,
say, £750.
I.—Inspection of Dwelling-houses During the Year.
(1) Total number of dwelling-houses inspected for
housing defects (under Public Health or Housing
Acts) and the number of inspections made 5,951
(2) Number of dwelling-houses (included under
head (1) above) which were inspected and
recorded under the Housing Consolidated Regulations,
1925, and the number of inspections
made 412
(3) Number of dwelling-houses found to be in a state so
dangerous or injurious to health as to be unfit
for human habitation Nil
(4) Number of dwelling-houses (exclusive of those
referred to under the preceding sub-head) found
not to be in all respects reasonably fit for human
habitation 323
