The figure of 1.00 rooms per person represented the sixth least
favourable found in Essex.
Occupations.-Walthamstow showed evidence of the following
local industries:-Cabinet making, woodwork, printing, boot and
shoe making. Together with West Ham it was the most industrial
type of area in the County. There were high proportions of scientific
instrument workers, tailoresses, celluloid and brush makers. The
proportion of domestic servants was the lowest in the County.
The following were the numbers of persons employed in the main
occupations followed:-
Males.-Transport, 5,937; Metal Work, 4,628; Commerce and
Finance, 4,422; Clerical Work, etc., 3,801; Wood and Furniture
Work, 3,354; Printing, etc., 2,117; Building, etc., 1,820; Warehousing,
etc., 1,766; Public Administration and Defence, 1,383;
Personal Service, 1,154; Painting, etc., 1,141.
Females.-Textiles, 3,373; Clerical Work, etc., 3,247; Personal
Service, 2,827; Commerce and Finance, 1,580.
Unemployment.-The degree of unemployment in the area
during 1930 may be estimated from the following data kindly
supplied by Mr. W. H. Goodfellow, manager of the Local Employment
Exchange.
The total insured workpeople of both sexes in Walthamstow is approximately 24,000, and a test showed that roughly two-thirds of the figures given below (which cover the whole Exchange Area) related to persons residing in Walthamstow (excluding Juveniles).
