12. MID WIVES.
The 13 Midwives who practice in the Borough attended 680 cases
as Midwives and 149 cases as Maternity Nurses.
Your Council took over the duties of Local Supervising Authority
under the Midwives Acts from the County Council with effect from
the 1st April, 1931.
13. PUERPERAL FEVER AND PYREXIA.
The table facing this page gives full details of the 22 cases notified
in 1930. Of the 22 cases, 19 were admitted to Hospital at the request
of the notifying Practitioners, 18 to Whipps Cross Hospital under
your Authority's scheme as laid down by the Regulations, and one
—a non-resident,—to the North-Western Fever Hospital, Hampstead
(London County Council) under arrangements made by the
patient's Practitioner. Dr. Muir, Medical Superintendent, Whipps
Cross Hospital, has kindly supplied details of Hospital treatment,
etc.

In addition, six notifications of Puerperal Pyrexia were made in
respect of Walthamstow mothers confined in Institutions outside the
Borough, four being at the Mothers' Hospital, Clapton, one at the
Royal Free Hospital and one at Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford.
No death was recorded amongst this group.
A second opinion was requested on two occasions and both cases
were nursed at home.
During 1930 the Consultant under the Regulations was Dr.
Frances Huxley, who, owing to pressure of other work, resigned on
11th February, 1931, The Consultants now available are Mr. G. F.
Gibberd, M.S., F.R.C.S., and Mr. W. McK. H. McCullagh, D.S.O.,
M.C., M.B., F.R.C.S.
From the 2nd to 4th March three cases of Puerperal Fever were
notified from a Maternity Home in the Borough and a further case on
April 10th. None were residents in the Borough and all were
removed to Hospital. Full investigations were made at the Home
both by the County and Borough Medical Officers of Health.
