Rheumatism Clinic.

The Physician attended 29 morning sessions during the year, and 223 children (73 of these being new cases) made 441 attendances. The 223 children were found to be suffering from the following conditions :—

The possibility of making arrangements for the operative treatment of
selected cases of heart disease has been discussed with the physician in charge
of the Clinic. Representations in this regard have been made to the County
School Medical Officer.
Speech Clinic.— Miss P. Lough, the Speech Therapist attended the
Clinic at the Valentines School daily.
By the end of the year, 111 individual children of school age had received
speech therapy at this Clinic, making a total of 1,452 attendances. The defects
treated were as follows :—
Dysphonia 1
Stammering 35
Dyslalia 41
Cleft Palate 3
Post Operative (Tonsillectomy) 28
Neurological 2
Lip Reading 1
69 children of school age were discharged from the Clinic during the year.
In 56 cases the speech was normal. Of the remaining 13 cases, 6 ceased to
attend for treatment, 6 left school or left the district and in 1 case the treatment
proved ineffective.
Continuity of after treatment is secured with the co-operation of teachers
who have been supplied with an explanatory memorandum on the subject
prepared by the Speech Therapist.
