2. Population.
The number of patients and resident staff on the 30th June, 1940, at the following public institutions, was

The net population for 1940 of 144,654 is obtained bv deducting the population
in institutions (4,256) from the Registrar-General's Estimate, 148,910,
and this is the figure used as the basis for compiling the various rates in this
report, excluding Infant and Maternal Mortality Rates.
3. Births.—The number of births registered during the year was 2,024-

i.e., 2.47 per cent of the births registered were illegitimate.
The birth-rate, calculated on the net estimate of the population of 144,654
is 13.9 per 1,000.
4. Deaths.—-The total number of deaths of Ilford residents was 1,541This
is obtained by taking the total deaths registered in the district (1,538),
subtracting the deaths of non-residents occuring in the district (481), and
adding the deaths of Ilford residents registered as having died in other
districts (484).
