Two babies, notified as suffering from Pemphigus Neonatorum were
removed to the Isolation Hospital.
Of the infants born, there were 10 stillbirths. In all instances the midwife
was engaged as a maternity nurse only.
Twenty infants died. In seven instances the midwife was engaged as a
maternity nurse only.
(c) Salvation Army District Midwifery Service.
In accordance with Section 1 of the Midwives Act, 1936, the Council
made an agreement with the Salvation Army Mother's Hospital for the
provision of a domiciliary service of midwives to attend cases in the district
bordered by Goodmayes Lane, Green Lane, Bennetts Castle Lane and Longbridge
Road in the Borough of Ilford and including these four roads. The
agreement took effect as from the 1st January, 1938.
94 cases were attended by the Salvation Army midwives during the year ;
64 as a midwife and 30 as a maternity nurse.
(d) Compensation to Midwives Ceasing to Practise.
(1) Two Midwives aged 43 and 49 years voluntarily surrendered their
certificates to this Council during the year in accordance with Section 5 (1)
of the Midwives Act, 1936. In one case compensation of £284 2s. Od. was
paid to the Midwife, and in the second case £571 6s. 6d., but of the latter
amount, £106 10s. 11d. and £26 12s. 1d. was recovered from the Barking
and Dagenham Councils respectively as the Midwife had also practised in
those areas.
(2) A Midwife, who had acted as a maternity nurse in Ilford, but had
not at any time notified her intention to practise as a Midwife, voluntarily
surrendered her certificate to the Southend-on-Sea Council. This Council
unsuccessfully appealed against the decision of the Minister of Health to
contribute towards the compensation payable to the Midwife, and they were
required to pay the sum of £3 1s. 2d. as their contribution.
(3) This Council joined with the Dagenham Council in giving notice to
a Midwife, aged 63 years, resident in the latter area, requiring her to surrender
her certificate in accordance with Section 5 (2) of the Midwives Act, 1936. As
the Midwife had attended cases and notified her intention to practise in Ilford,
this Council contributed £147 11s. 1d. towards the compensation paid to her.

All patients booked for admission to the Maternity Home are medically
examined at the Ante-Natal Clinic.
During the year, 128 cases other than those hooked for admission to the
Maternity Home were examined at the Clinics. There were 258 attendances
by such cases.
The Consulting Obstetrician or his Deputy made weekly visits to the
Home during 1939.
