60 children were found to be suffering from dental caries and 93 other
children had other defects requiring treatment.
Dental Clinic.
97 half-days were taken up for the treatment of 300 expectant and
nursing mothers, and 301 children under 5 years of age during 1939.
Ophthalmic Clinic.
11 expectant and nursing mothers and 89 children under 5 years of age
were treated by the Council Oculist during 1939.
Orthopaedic Department.
(i) Valentines Clinic.—18 sessions were held during 1939, 155 children
under five years of age being examined, making 203 attendances.
(ii) Mayesbrook Clinic.—9 sessions were held during 1939, 67 children
under five years of age being examined, making 114 attendances.
Six children were admitted to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital,
Country Branch, Stanmore, during the year, suffering from (4) congenital
equino-varus, (1) metatarsus varus and (1) congenital dislocation of hip.
Three of the children were discharged during the year and the other three
were remaining in hospital at the end of the year.
At the Valentines Clinic, 51 children under five years of age were treated
by the Masseuse during the year, and 255 attendances were made by these
children.
Treatment was also given to 30 children who made 235 attendances at the
Mayesbrook Clinic.
Artificial Sunlight Clinic.
35 sessions were held at the Valentines Clinic and 35 at Mayesbrook Clinic.
39 children in all were treated, making 526 attendances.
17 cases were still attending at the end of the year ; of the remainder, two
had left the district and in six cases the parents had discontinued treatment.
All the others were discharged from further treatment, having improved.
Aural Clinic.
The Aural Surgeon attended at 37 afternoon sessions during 1939, and
158 attendances were made by 72 children of pre-school age, 56 being new
cases.
Rheumatism Clinic.
Nine children under 5 years of age, 5 being new cases, made 17 attendances.
Convalescent Home Treatment.
By arrangement with the Invalid Children's Aid Association one child
under five years of age was sent to a Convalescent Home for a period of
10 weeks.
