The causes of the deaths were as follows:—
Cardiac failure, Caesarian section, operation, general
peritonitis 1
Cardiac failure, haemorrhage and shock following
lacerated uterus 1
Puerperal eclampsia, eight months pregnancy 1
Septicaemia, recent delivery, ante-partum infection 1
Ruptured uterus, childbirth 1
Premature childbirth, albuminuria of pregnancy 1
Puerperal septicaemia 1
Enquiries into the cause of maternal deaths are made by the
Medical Officer of Health from the medical practitioner in charge
of the case or from the Institution to which the patient was admitted,
in accordance with the Ministry of Health's requirements. A
special form is used for this purpose which is forwarded to the
Ministry of Health on completion.
Cases notified as puerperal fever or puerperal pyrexia are
investigated by the Sanitary Inspectors and Health Visitors.
