In England and Wales the birth-rate was equal to 351 per 1,000,
and 0.6 below the decennial average
Death and Death-rate.
The deaths registered in the three Sub-Districts were as follows:—
St. George, Bloomsbury 276
St. Giles, South 572
St. Giles, North 271
Entire District 1,119
of which 585 were males, and 534 females.
In order to obtain the accurate death-rate, a deduction must
be made of 47 deaths of non-parishioners who died in the
Workhouse, Broad Street; the British Lying-in-Hospital, Endell
Street; and the Infants' Home, 35, Great Coram Street; and 135
deaths must be added of parishioners who died in the several
public hospitals and institutions out of the District, and other
corrections must also be made for the Sub-Districts, and the proper
numbers apportioned to each.
These corrections show the actual number of deaths at 1,207, giving
a death-rate for the whole District of 22.5 per 1,000.
The ratio of deaths to population is as 1 to 44.2. The average
death-rate for the ten years, 1869 to 1878, was 24.52 per 1,000.
The various deaths which occurred in public institutions, both in
and out of the District, also the corrected death-rate, are shown more
clearly by the following tables:—
