Five new crossing refuges were formed, viz., two in Oxford Street,
by Bloomsbury Street; one in Oxford Street, by Tottenham Court
Road; one in Theobalds Road, by Kingsgate Street; and one at the
west end of Theobalds Road, by Southampton Row.
New Sewers.
The following lengths of new Sewers were constructed during the
year:—
Southampton Row (from High 510ft. lineal of brick sewer, 4ft. by
Holborn to Vernon Place) 2ft. 6in. internal dimensions.
New Compton Street (north
end) 90 do. do.
Dyott Street (north end) 176 do. do.
Smart's Buildings (north
end) 90 do. do.
Total 830 ft. lineal of new brick sewers.
A length of 210 feet of old brick sewer, running beneath the houses
on the east side of Cross Lane, being found to be very decayed and in
a dangerous condition, was filled up and a 12 in. pipe sewer laid in its
stead.
Street Cleansing.
The cleansing of the public carriageways was performed by a staff
of 35 men employed by the Board, and consisting of 1 foreman, 3
gangers, and 31 sweepers.
Two sweeping machines, each drawn by one horse, were used in
sweeping the paved carriageways. The street sweepings were carted
away by contract, and amounted to a total of 10,378 loads.

The cost of the street cleansing for the year ending 25th March, 1880, was as follows:—
