The carriageways of High Holborn, Oxford Street, and Tottenham
Court Road were washed, on several occasions during the year,
by means of watering-carts and the horse-sweeping machines; the
cost of the washing is included in the two items of cost for street
cleansing and street watering.
Street Watering.
The street watering was performed by contract, the Contractor
supplying all carts, horses and drivers required, at a fixed price for
the whole work for the year.

The water used for this purpose (including that used for street washing) was 3,192,000 gallons.

Removal of Dust.
The dust and ashes were removed from the houses in the District
by contract, at a cost of £1,437: 10s.
Limewhiting Courts.
The walls of buildings at the entrances to the mews, yards, courts,
alleys, &c. in the District were twice cleansed and limewhited at a
cost of about £60.
Public Urinals.
The public urinals belonging to the Board are 19 in number, and
contain 48 compartments ; 9 of the urinals, containing 33 compartments,
have water laid on to them, the others have not. The whole
of them are cleansed daily by the Board's workmen.
Great complaints being made by inhabitants of the offensiveness
of the urinal in Parker Street, it was removed, and a new cast-iron
urinal to accommodate two persons was erected in its place.
