more fatal in the poorer parts of the District, may be greatly ameliorated
by improved hygienic conditions.
Doubtless a large amount both of the sickness and mortality arising
from chest diseases may be traced to the inmates of the common
lodging-houses, which abound in St. Giles.
These houses are so numerous that I have obtained from the Metropolitan
police authorities a correct list of them, with the number of
inmates allowed to each, and have tabulated them for your information.
The whole of the houses are under the active supervision of
Inspecting-Sergeant Peter Pitt, 41a, Albany Street Police Station.
