The mean death-rate must be ascertained by a similar method to
that adopted for determining the birth-rate, and I am enabled to do so,
through the kindness of the authorities of the various hospitals and
institutions.
The following Table will show the number of persons who died
during the year in St. Giles Workhouse; the British Lying-in
Hospital, Endell Street; and the Infants'Home, No. 35, Great Coram
Street—institutions all situate in St. Giles District.

I visited the several public hospitals, and was permitted to inspect
the books, in order to ascertain the deaths of our parishioners in them.
The following Table is made from those records :

These tables must now be subjected to various corrections, in order
to arrive at the actual death-rate.
154 persons died in the Workhouse, 8 in the British Lying-in
Hospital, and 13 in the Infants' Home; together, 175. But only 111
of these really belonged to the District, leaving 64 outsiders from vari-
