mothers, 55 to St. Giles South, 28 to St. Giles North, 20 to the
Strand District, and there were 13 whose parishes could not be
clearly ascertained. Three of the latter were undoubtedly outsiders,
the other 10 were presumably belonging to one or other of the
united parishes. I shall, therefore, enumerate them as our own, and
distribute them proportionately among the three Sub-Districts, viz.,
2 to St. George Bloomsbury, 5 to St. Giles South, and 3 to St.
Giles North. After these deductions have been made, there will be
only 60 of the births in the Workhouse that belong St. Giles South.
The births deducted from St. Giles South must be added to the
other Sub-Districts.
To revert to the births in the British Lying-in Hospital; we
noticed that there were 27 births in that Institution which belonged
to this District, and of that number 5 must be appropriated to St.
George Bloomsbury, 16 to St. Giles South (where they are already
registered), and 6 to St. Giles North. The 5 and 6 must be added
to the numbers for these Sub-Districts.
9. This analysis is necessarily tedious, because complex; but the
results show that the statement of births by the Registrar General
does not accurately represent the actual facts of the birth-rate in our
District and its Sub-Districts; and if exactness be desirable in this
respect—as most unquestionably it is, for without it there cannot be
a safe basis for further calculations—such a minute analysis as that
now made is indispensable. I do not wish to be misunderstood as
criticising captiously the Registrar General's returns. They are
exact so far as they exhibit the actual registrations, and they are
absolutely necessary to a more detailed investigation.
10. For the sake of clearness I will put these calculations in a
tabular form.
