fatal diseases of the liver, kidneys, and other organs, are directly caused by
certain kinds of food and drink. Many other diseases, the causes of which are
unknown, are, in all probability, induced by kinds of aliment, adulterated
or not, whose action upon the system remains to be ascertained. This Act
may be turned to the most important use, in detecting these obscure causes
of disease, and a great benefit might be thus conferred on science and
humanity.
Sanitary Inspection.
66. The large increase of work done by the Inspectors, in consequence
of the various duties imposed by the Legislature, and the growing opinion
of the importance of the office, will be best understood by a perusal of the
subjoined tabular statement.

In addition to the foregoing duties of inspection, &c., a considerable
quantity of bad food has been seized, which has entailed much trouble and
responsibility on the officers.
