here it was as low as in the healthiest of the four previous years. It must
he observed however that in 1859-60, there had been a very high death-rate
in this last sub-district, so that, apart from sanitary improvement, a year of
low mortality would be likely to follow.
Here as a set-off to the deaths may be found a space to note the births in
the three sub-districts, in so far as they were registered.
sub-districts. | 1857. | 1858. | 1859. | 1860. | 1861. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
St. George, Bloomsbury | 398 | 411 | 430 | 416 | |
St. Giles's South | 860 | 717 | 780 | 786 | 808 |
St. Giles's North | 592 | 557 | 538 | 562 | 532 |
Whole District | 1850 | 1677 | 1729 | 1778 | 1756 |
Here it may be noticed that the sub-distric t where the deaths were few had
an unusual number of births, while in the two sub-districts where the
mortality was higher than in 1860, the births of 1861 fell below their
numbers in that year.
13. Considering, for the rest the ten smaller localities into which it has
customary in these reports to divide the district of St. Giles, we shall get a
more accurate account of the distribution of mortality and shall be enabled
with more advantage to consider the causes of death specially prevalent in
each neighbourhood. The boundaries of the ten localities may now be
assumed to be known.

The highest mortality from all causes prevailed in the neighbourhood of
Short's Gardens, around (but not including) the workhouse. Here the deathrate
was 34.7 per thousand, being nearly three times the mortality of the
most healthy district around Bedford Square. The locality of Dudley Street
was the next worst in the number of its deaths, giving 32.4 per 1000. Highest
and best on the list stood as usual the neighbourhoods of Bedford Square,
