In the above Table the estimate of population in each year is based on the census of 1851, and on the rate of increase then ascertained. A more correct estimate can be made now that the census of 1861 is published. Calculating the population afresh, the above figures need a little modification, the following being the result for London and St. Giles's.

The figures in the above Table were obtained by personal inspection of the books of the several hospitals,
with the exception of those marked with a star, which are estimated from the returns of former years. The
number 5, in the column of the Westminster Hospital, should be 8 (Mr. Beale), and 61, under St, Mary's Hospital,
should be 44 (Dr.Thomson). There were no deaths among St, Giles's patients in the Small Pox Hospital
