Church-lane district, here again, holds a much better position in 1859 than in
former years. The neighbourhoods of Dudley-street and Short's Gardens still
stand very low on the lists, but they are again, as in 1857, outdone by the northern
Drury-lane locality, where many of the deaths from consumption are referable to the
circumstance of very many common lodging-houses being situated here.
Diseases of the Respiratory organs form another group permanently in excess
in St. Giles's. Their distribution over its ten subdivisions in 1859 is shown below.
Here, again, the streets around Dudley-street and those between Hoiborn and Great
Queen-street vie with each other in mortality.
