Smoke Nuisance, Seven complaints were received during 1960
in respect of smoke and grit emission. These related to six premises,
two of which were domestic.
With regard to the commercial premises, in two instances the
cause for complaint was the misuse of coke stoves. Advice was given on
the manner in which the stoves could be operated without causing
nuisance, with particular reference to the procedure for lighting up.
Another complaint referred to smoke emanating from an industrial
type incinerator. Here again the nuisance, which was intermittent and
infrequent, wa3 eliminated by care in using the plant. The firm concerned
are considering the removal of the plant, or redesigning it to
include an afterburner. This will effectively consume any smoke which
may be generated.
The remaining complaint referred to excessive grit emission from
the Power Station, With the type of fuel which is now used at these
premises, there will always be the possibility that from time to time
grit deposition will be apparent. This takes place when there is a
breakdown, or when operational faults occur. Also in spite of the
efficiency of the grit collecting equipment, the small percentage of
solid matter which escapes this equipment is of some significance.
Recording of Atmospheric Pollution. An instrument is maintained
on the Guildhall roof for the recording of smoke and sulphur dioxide by
the volumetric method. The advantage of this method over the deposit
gauge is that it is possible to obtain daily readings of pollution and to
observe more closely the effects of weather conditions on the state of
the atmosphere. The following table and the graph overleaf indicate
the results obtained. Smoke 13 expressed in milligrams per 100 cubic
metres and the sulphur dioxide in parts per 100 million.
