(e) Skin Disease and (f) External Eye Disease.
At medical inspections during the year 547 children were
found to be suffering from skin affections (as compared with 480
in the year 1934). Eighty-seven cases of external eye disease were
discovered, as compared with 136 in the year 1934.
(g) Vision.
Only children with marked visual defect have been referred
for treatment and these, including cases of strabismus, numbered
406. In addition, there were 217 children in whom there was
evidence of a lesser degree of visual defect and these are being
kept under observation.
(h) Ear Disease and Hearing.
1.3 per cent. of the children examined were found to be suffering
from otitis media. (1.6 per cent. in 1934). The percentage
of deaf children was 0.09, the corresponding number for last year
being 0.4.
(i) Dental Defects.
(See Report of Dental Surgeon on page 139.
(j) Crippling Defects.
Reference to Table III will furnish information with regard
to the occurrence of crippling defects in the area. Fifty-eight
cases were discovered at routine medical inspection during the
year.
6. INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
There was a marked diminution in the number and severity
of cases of Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever.
Non-notifiable diseases also showed a decrease except Mumps,
which was somewhat prevalent during the period March to June.
