Mental Deficiency.
The Corporation of West Ham admit to their Colony at South
Ockenden a number of mental defectives from this area. This
arrangement has materially eased the situation as regards the
provision of institutional treatment for higher-grade cases. The
object of the Colony is to provide adequate training and instruction
in suitable occupations, as well as environment conducive to
happiness and physical well-being. The institution is ideally
situated and fulfils this requirement in every respect. In addition
patients of a similar category are admitted to various institutions
including Cell Barnes, Herts. Many slight cases are placed with
suitable guardians. Low and medium grade defectives are
accommodated at Forest Gate Hospital.
