POLLUTION OF THE RIVERS POOL AND RAYENSBOURNE.
During the early part of the year an examination of the
rivers passing through the Borough, and their tributaries, was
made with the view of ascertaining whether the same were contaminated,
and also the nature and source of any pollution.
The fact that there are connected with the rivers two
large water-cress beds, that the Pool River passes through the
works of the Crystal Palace Gas Company at Lower Sydenham,
and also receives the effluent from the Croydon Corporation's
Sewage Farm, were sufficient to warrant a careful enquiry.
