due to immigration of 40,588 in the ten years, April 1861
to April 1871, and of 26,076 in the ten years 1871-81; the
natural increment of population in those two ten-year periods
having been only 9538 and 16,934 respectively.

The above facts will be more clearly apprehended in the tabular form, as follows:-

The subjoined Table shews the increase of population, and how brought about, in the last three decennial periods:-

In the decennial period 1861-71, the population increased
by 71. per cent-, and the inhabited houses by 66 per cent.
only; in 1871-81 the increase in population was 357 percent.,
and of inhabited houses 27. per cent only.Durig the last
ten years, although the houses increased by 9. per cent., the
population, as enumerated, increased by 1. per cent.only—
a fact which I am quite unable to explain.
We were prepared for a considerable increase in population
in the Brompton sub-district, so man) houses having been
built in the ten years. The increase in the number of "inhabited
houes" as so described by the Registrar-General,
was 1076, which, at 7.6 persons to a house, the proportional
