In Table No. 75 which follows, the percentages of children
of varying ages, hand fed, are shown in comparative form for
each of the last five years. It will be noted that there is a
very definite diminution in the number of children entirely
hand fed in the first four months of life, an indication that the
efforts of the staff to encourage and maintain breast feeding
are meeting with some measure of success.

(p) Maternal Mortality. In England and Wales the deaths
of mothers, from conditions primarily due to child bearing,
approximate to four maternal deaths to every 1000 live births,
and this figure has been more or less constant for over 20
