PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Stepney,
London, E.l,
To The Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney.
Your Worship, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present my report on the state of the public
health in Stepney for the year 1956.
The population of the Borough according to the Registrar-General's
estimate is 98,160, a decrease of 20 from last year. The population in
the Census year, 1951, was 98,581. The rateable value of the Borough
increased by almost a million pounds, due to revaluation, and the penny
rate now produces nearly double the former income.
The live birth rate* is 19.44 (18.59)≠, the death rate 12.08 (12.04),
the marriage rate 19.9 (19.5), the maternal mortality rate nil (1.07),
the infant mortality rate 22.52 (23.00) and the neonatal mortality rate
17.81 (18.07). There were 42 stillbirths, giving a rate of 21.53 (21.95).
The weather during the year was not good though the winter was mild.
A full report appears in the text.
There were no major epidemics of infectious diseases during the year.
Notifications decreased from 2,677 to 1,324 chiefly due to the reduction
in measles which tends to recur in biennial periods.
