All London buses now run on diesel oil and there are some 5,600 on
the roads at any one time, in addition to 1,400 trolley buses.
Drainage.
Owners of premises were summoned on two occasions for failing to
reconstruct defective drains to comply with notices served upon them
under Section 40 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936. In one case
a fine of £3.0.0d and £5.5.0d costs were imposed. The other case was
adjourned sine die on an undertaking given by the defendant to complete
an Agreement for the Council to carry out the necessary work, on his
behalf, and to pay the Council's cost of such agreement; the Court also
awarded costs to the Council of £3.5.0d.
Factories.
A copy of the annual return furnished to the Ministry of Labour and
National Service will be found in Table 10 on page 62.
Heating appliances (Fireguards) Act. 1952.
A retailer, summoned for exposing for sale an electric fire not fitted
with a guard, was fined £1.0.0 and required to pay £2.2s costs to the Council.
Secondhand electric heaters not fitted with guards, found exposed for sale
at another premises, were immediately withdrawn from sale.

An owner who was fined £25.0.0d for non-compliance with an Abatement
Order, appealed to the Quarter Sessions against the decision of the Magistrates,
whose decision was confirmed,and the appellant was allowed seven
days in which to pay the fine and ordered to pay £5.5.0d costs to the
Council for attending to oppose the appeal.
