Scarlet Fever.
784 cases of Scarlet Fever were notified during the year, or 109 less than in
the previous year. 758 were removed to Fever Hospitals.
135 belonged to the Limehouse District, with 3 deaths ;
92 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, with no deaths ;
380 belonged to Mile End Old Town, with 4 deaths ;
177 belonged to the Whitechapel District, with no deaths.
The death rate for the whole Borough was .025 per 1,000 of the population,
while that for the whole of London was .04 per 1,000.
Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.
423 cases were notified during the year, or 83 more than in the previous year,
and 409 were removed to Fever Hospitals.
96 belonged to the Limehouse District, with 5 deaths, or at the rate of
.094 per 1,000 of the population.
76 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, with 4 deaths, or at the rate of
.085 per 1,000 of the population.
151 belonged to Mile End Old Town, with 7 deaths, or at the rate of .063
per 1,000 of the population.
100 belonged to the Whitechapel District, with 5 deaths, or at the rate of
.076 per 1,000 of the population.
The death rate throughout the whole Borough was .076 per 1,000 of the
population. The death rate for the whole of London was .09 per 1,000.
Typhus Fever.
2 cases were notified, both occurring in Mile End Old Town.
On May 19th I received notification certificates from Dr. Manning, of the South
Eastern Hospital, that M. L. B., aged 17, (who was admitted to the Fever Hospital
on May 14th), and F. B., aged 7, (who had been at the Fever Hospital since May 7th),
were suffering from Typhus Fever.
On making enquiries at 75, Ocean Street, where they were removed from,
I found that the following persons had been ill:—J. F. W., aged 30, a street vendor
of Vinegar, was taken ill on March 11th, and taken to the Mile End Infirmary on
March 25th. He had lived at 75, Ocean Street for a year. He was taken ill about
