Three of the samples of non-alcoholic orange wine were not genuine, two of
them containing salicylic acid to the extent of 3.5 and 4.6 grains per pint
respectively, and the other 10T5 per cent. by volume of alcohol. In the latter
case proceedings were taken and the vendor was fined £2 with £1 3s. 0d. costs.
Four of the samples of non-alcoholic raisin wine were not genuine, one
containing benzoic acid to the extent of 8.8 grains per pint, another salicylic acid
4.37 grains per pint, a third 11.95 per cent. of alcohol by volume and the fourth
salicylic acid to the extent of 105 grains per pint. In the last two cases
proceedings were taken and the vendors were fined £2 with 23s. costs and £7 with
£5 5s. 0d. costs respectively.
Both the samples of ginger wine were found to contain salicylic acid, in one
to the extent of 4.53 grains per pint and in the other 3.67 grains. Proceedings
were not thought advisable in these cases.
Two of the samples of sausage were found to contain boric acid, one (pork)
to the extent of 3.5 grains per lb. and the other (beef) to the extent of 4.6 grains.
No proceedings were taken.
A sample of vinegar was found to contain numerous "vinegar eels," otherwise
the rest of the samples were returned as genuine.

The percentage of samples found adulterated was again somewhat below the
average. With reference to the convictions under the Act during 1914, in 4
instances the defendants had been once, in 3 twice, in 1 three times, in 1 instance
four times, and in 1 seven times previously convicted.
