In the following table are given the areas of the Wards in acres, and the estimated populations per acre:—

In estimating the above figures, the area of the Holborn Union Workhouse
premises and the population resident thereon and also the area of the Borough
covered by water have not been taken into account.
BIRTHS.
The births registered in the Borough numbered 3,335, of which 1,710 were of
males and 1,625 of females. The number corrected by the inclusion of the births
occurring in public institutions outside Shoreditch, the parents being residents of
the Borough, and the exclusion of those occurring in public institutions within the
Borough, the parents not being residents of Shoreditch, was 3,470, of which 1,764
were of males and 1,706 of females.

The distribution of the corrected births in the eight Wards of the Borough is given below:—

Outside the Borough 201 births were registered—89 of males and 112 of females
—the parents being residents of Shoreditch. In the Shoreditch Infirmary 100
births were registered, of which 52 were of males and 48 of females. In three of
these (females) the parents did not belong to Shoreditch.
In the Holborn Union Workhouse there were 70 births, 39 of males and 31 of
females. In 63 of these (35 male and 28 female) the parents were not resident in
Shoreditch.
Of the births registered as occurring in the Shoreditch Infirmary 44 (21 of
males and 23 of females) were illegitimate. In the Holborn Workhouse 50 (30 male
and 20 female) were illegitimate, and elsewhere in the Borough 25, of which
15 were male and 10 female.
