In the subjoined table is contained a summary giving an idea as to the nature of the work done for the abatement of nuisances and for improving the dwellings of the people in Shoreditch, which has been compiled from the abstracts of their work prepared by the sanitary inspectors:—

In addition to the above 5 old brick drains were removed and in 51 instances
nuisances and annoyance resulting from the presence of rats on premises were dealt
with. Where rats are complained of it is most frequently found that there are defects
in drains on the premises or near at hand which have to be remedied in order to
get rid of them. Rats are known to be closely associated with the dissemination
of the infection of plague, the importance of having sound drains so as to exclude
rats from dwellings as a precaution against plague, therefore, is not to be overlooked.
The attention of the sanitary staff was specially directed to the point towards the
latter end of the year in consequence of the occurrence of several cases of plague
in one of the Eastern Counties of England.
