In the following table are contained the numbers of deaths from diarrhœa in
Shoreditch, year by year, from 1856 to 1900, inclusive:—

Prom the above figures there has been no appreciable decrease in the mortality
resulting from diarrhoea. The variations in the numbers of deaths annually registered
are probably dependent upon meteorological conditions which influence the vitality of
the micro-organisms causing the disease.
A good deal of confusion has arisen owing to the use of various synonyms in the
certification of diarrhœa deaths, which has seriously vitiated the accuracy of statistics
relating to the disease. Epidemic diarrhœa is recognised by the Royal College of
Physicians to be a general disease of a specific character, in the same sense as enteric
and other fevers, and the only authorised names to be used in certifying deaths from
this disorder are: epidemic enteritis, zymotic enteritis, or epidemic diarrhœa, and
