The mortality amongst those attacked, which was 29.0 per cent. in 1893 and 25.0
per cent. in 1894, also shews a decrease, being 24.1 per cent. Of 103 cases amongst
children under five years of age, 49 proved fatal, or 47.5 per cent. died, as compared
with 43.0 per cent. in 1894 and 61.3 per cent. in 1893. Of 141 cases amongst
persons over five years, ten terminated fatally, or 7.0 per cent., as compared with
11.5 per cent. in 1894 and 11.4 per cent. in 1893. The whole of the 59 deaths from
this disease were of children under 15 years of age.
In the subjoined Table is shewn the distribution of the cases and deaths,
together with the attack rate and death-rate per 1,000 inhabitants, the case mortality
and the populations and the birth rates in the four sub-districts of the parish.

The death-rate from diphtheria for the whole parish was 0.48 per 1000 of the
population. The number of deaths from diphtheria registered in the metropolis was
2,316, which gives, with the estimated population in London of 4,892,346, a deathrate
of 0.53 per 1,000.
