SLAUGHTER OF POULTRY ACT, 1967
There is one registered premises in the Borough at which the
slaughter of poultry is carried out. The premises consist of a
turkey farm on which 4-5,000 turkeys are raised annually. These
birds are all slaughtered at the Christmas period, the main bulk
between 12th to 20th December. Slaughter is carried out at two
specially equipped units within the curtilage of the premises, both
units are equipped with 85 volt stunning devices. The birds are
dry plucked after slaughter and placed in chilled storage. No
evisceration is carried out on the premises.
In 1970 approximately 5,000 birds were slaughtered, the
premises were visited on 16 occasions.
No birds were rejected as unfit for human consumption. The
standard of hygiene maintained during the rearing and subsequent
slaughter of the birds is very satisfactory. The flock was carefully
"culled" during the rearing period to ensure that only healthy
birds in good condition were slaughtered.
