No serious epidemics were notified during 1954.
Forty-six cases of Scarlet Fever were notified as against 91
during the year 1953. The infection continued to be mild in
character.
There were 123 cases of Measles and 118 of Whooping Cough
notified, as against 481 and 163 during 1953.
Three cases of Poliomyelitis (paralytic) occurred in children
of school age. Two patients have fully recovered and the third is
making good progress but is still under treatment.
In addition to the above. 4 cases of Dysentery and 5 of
Pneumonia were notified.
No case of diphtheria was notified.
Three children of school age were notified as suffering from
pulmonary tuberculosis, of this number one case was an inward
transfer from another district.
No school child was notified as having died of an infectious
disease during 1954.

During the year 60 children and young persons appeared before the Local Court. The types of offences were :—
