individual pupils were found to require treatment. This gives a
percentage of 7.2 compared with 7.7 for 1953.
Table II B, at the end of this report, gives information on the
general condition of the pupils inspected, in the various age groups.
The examinations continue to show a very satisfactory standard
of health and general physique, and the attendance of parents at
such inspections is high.

Comparative rates of the general condition of the pupils inspected during the past five years are given below :—

Categories A and B can be considered satisfactory, but all
children in category C are normally kept under supervision and
special advice is given re. such matters as special diet, adequate
sleep, etc.
SPECIAL EXAMINATIONS.
In addition to the periodic medical inspections, a further 1.414
cases came under medical supervision during 1954, necessitating
1,932 medical examinations. (Figures for 1953 were 1.630 cases
and 2.070 examinations.)
Sixty-one cases requiring special investigation were examined
at the Municipal Offices.
One hundred and fifty-nine cases were referred to the various
hospitals for Specialists' advice and treatment, of which 89 were
Ear, Nose and Throat cases.
The past year has seen a continuance of the close liaison which
exists between the hospitals, general practitioners, and this department.
and I should like to express my appreciation and thanks for
the assistance so willingly given.
The continued valued co-operation of the Head Teachers of
the schools is another factor in any success that may come the way
of the school health service, and to them I should like to express
a special word of thanks.
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.
During the year eight schools including the Occupation Centre
were visited, and a total of 551 children in various age groups were
examined, necessitating the holding of 54 medical inspection
sessions.
Statistical details of these examinations will be found in
Table VIII at the end of this report.
