SECTION F.
PREVALENCE OF, AND CONTROL OVER INFECIOUS
AND OTHER DISEASES.
Statistical details of notifiable intectious diseases are shown
in Tables V, VI and VII in the Appendix.
There were no epidemics of a serious nature during 1954.
A total of six hundred and twenty-four cases of infectious
diseases (excluding tuberculosis) were notified, as against 1,592 for
the previous year.
SMALLPOX.
Although we had another year free from this disease, it is still
an ever present potential danger which may arise at any moment—
the danger perhaps being greater with the ever increasing speed
with which it is possible to travel from one part of the globe to
another. Four people living in the area who had recently returned
from abroad and who were possible contacts, were kept under
surveillance for the requisite period.
The following figures, which have been furnished by the County Medical Officer, show the number of persons who were vaccinated against smallpox during 1954 :—
