well-being. The garden produce helps to keep a good supply of
fresh fruit and vegetables and eggs, which we again feel to be a
tremendous asset.
Kind friends have provided entertainments for the residents
during the long winter evenings, and everyone enjoyed a Garden
Party on one of the few fine days of the summer when Southwood
were hosts to parties of old people from East London.
A Library Service is run with the help of the Borough Library.
"Merevale," Bickley Park Road, Bickley.
The Secretary of the North West Kent Housing Society,
Limited, who run this Home, has kindly furnished the following
information :—
"Merevale" had a successful year, during the course of which
steps were taken to completely re-organise the kitchen.
On the 31st December, 1954, the average age of the thirty-six
residents was 82.8 years, and five were over ninety. Four residents
died during the year, and three left for various reasons."

"The Vane" and "Town Court," Bickley.

These Homes are run by the Welfare Department of the London County Council, and the following details have been furnished by the Chief Officer of that Department:—

During the year only nine vacancies arose and these were all
filled through the Welfare Officer. Kent County Council. Maidstone,
General Health.
With an average age of 81 it is not surprising that the general
health of the residents can be described as only fair.
