824 live births were registered during the year, of which 419
were males, and 405 females, giving a birth rate of 12.7 per 1,000
total population. (Adjusted rate for comparison purposes 12.9).
This rate is a decrease on that for the previous year, and is below
that of 15.2 for England and Wales.

Average rate for the five years was 13.6.
Illegitimate Births.
There were 40 illegitimate births registered, of which 20 were
males, and 20 females.
The illegitimate birth rate, per 1,000 live and still births, for
the year 1954. is 47.8.
Stillbirths.
The stillbirth rate for the Borough during 1954. is 0.18 per
1,000 live and stillbirths, and 14.3 per 1,000 total population.
There were 12 stillbirths registered during the year, of which
9 were males and 3 females.
DEATHS
The Death Rate for the year 1954. is 11.2 per 1.000 total
population. (Adjusted rate 9.7.)
There were 727 deaths appertaining to the Borough and
registered during the year, of which 356 were males, and 371
females.
