PROVISION OF CLOTHING.
During the year twenty-one applications were received, as a
result of which thirty children of necessitous families were provided
with clothing at a total cost of £65 18s. 3d.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN SCHOOLS.
There were no serious epidemics notified during the year 1953.
The incidence of Measles and Whooping Cough showed an increase
over that of the previous year. i.e.. 481 and 163 cases for 1953. as
against 238 and 76 during 1952.
Ninety-one cases of Scarlet Fever in school children were
notified, as against 92 for the previous year. The infection was
mild in character and the distribution of cases fairly even throughout
the area.
No cases of Diphtheria were notified during 1953.

The following table gives details of incidence and number of cases of the various diseases notified which were admitted to hospital.

No child of school age was notified as having died of an
infectious disease during the year 1953.
Nine children of school age were notified as suffering from
Tuberculosis, seven being pulmonary and two non-pulmonary. Of
this number four cases were inward transfers from other districts.
JUVENILE DELINQUENCY.
During the year 62 children and young persons appeared before
the Local Court. The types of offences were:—
Larceny and attempted larceny 32
Wilful damage 2
Breaking and entering 6
Road Traffic Act 10
Wilful obstruction of footway 1
Causing unnecessary suffering to dog 1
Insulting behaviour 1
Beyond control 2
In need of care and protection 3
Breach of Probation and/or variations of Probation Order 6
