VERMIN AND UNCLEANLINESS INSPECTION.
A total of 17.478 inspections were carried out by the School
Nurses, as under:—
Primary and Secondary Schools 16,724
Grammar and Technical Schools 653
Occupation Centre 101

Five pupils were found to be infested, with a further 87 showing
minor evidence of uncleanliness.
HANDICAPPED CHILDREN.
A special clinic is held at the Municipal Offices on Saturday
mornings, and on other occasions as circumstances demand, to
which handicapped and other children needing special examination
are referred.
During 1953, 48 special cases were examined, of whom 17
have been certified as handicapped and not suitable for education
in ordinary schools.

There are, at the present time. 61 known educationally subnormal and physically handicapped children in the area. Details ofthese children are:—

There are 23 known ineducable children in the area, nine of
this number being in Institutions and 14 at home.
CHILD GUIDANCE.
Cases requiring treatment at the Child Guidance Clinics are
referred to the local hospital Psychiatric Department. Eighteen
cases were referred for treatment during 1953.
MILK IN SCHOOLS.
A return to the Ministry of Education showed that on a single
day in October, 1953. 88.26% of the pupils in attendance at
Primary and Secondary Schools received milk.
