In 6 instances it was found necessary for legal proceedings to
be taken.
Housing Applications
The task of visiting housing applicants and the preparation
of reports on their living conditions has been discontinued, with
the exception of certain cases where information is required by
the Council' s Housing Officerorby Housing Departments of outside
districts when a Wood Green resident is an applicant 012 their
Housing List. Several such visits were made by the Public Health
Inspectors during the year.
Housing Survey
The first phase of the Council's Slum Clearance Scheme in the
Winkfield/Acacia/Douglas Roads Area is well advanced. A public
enquiry was held in the Old Town Hall in January when objections
to the Compulsory Purchase Order covering this phase were heard
by an Inspector from the Ministry of Housing & Local Government.
After the enquiry, the Ministry s Inspector visited the Area and
inspected the property. In May the Minister confirmed the Area
with slight modification, which did not affect the Scheme materially.
The building of new flats as alternative accommodation
for the displaced families was already in progress, and rehousing
of the people concerned was commenced as soon as accommodation
became available. By the end of the year, this work of rehousing
was substantially completed.
Air Pollution
During 1957 the Council approved in principle the establishment
of a Smoke Control Area, and agreed to my suggestions for
the method of its introduction,
