Rent Act 1957.
The Rent Act 1957 came into operation in July 1957. It was
introduced to amend certain other enactments, including the Housing
Repairs and Rents Act. 1954, relating to the control of rents, the
right to retain possession of dwellings, to provide a minimum
length fornotice to terminate residential lettings and to enable
rented houses and flats to be put and kept in repair. It is this
latter part of the Act with which we have principally to deal.

Applications for Certificates of Disrepair began to come in during August. The procedure for dealing with these applications under the Act is more complicated than under the previous enactments and entails considerably increased work in the Department, both for the inspectorate and for the clerical staff.
