country as a whole, which was 30 and that for a group of towns of
comparable size which was 34.
Of the 17 infantile deaths, 11 occurred within 24 hours of birth,
and 13 during the first four weeks of life. This gives a Neo-natal
Mortality Rate of 19.
Of the 11 deaths occurring within 24 hours of birth, 6 were
those of premature babies. Three of these were triplets who lived
for 9, 10 and 11 hours respectively.

The following table shows the causes of death at the various ages under one year.

MATERNAL MORTALITY.
No deaths occurred during the year as a result of childbirth,
so that the Maternal Mortality Rate was nil.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE.
Table IV in the Appendix gives details of all the cases of
infectious disease notified in 1950. The total of 1,010 is higher than
that of the two previous years 1949 and 1948 which were respectively
911 and 762. 421 cases of measles and 376 of whooping cough
accounted for more than three-quarters of all the cases. There
were no deaths from measles and one from whooping cough. 99
