VIII.—INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The incidence of infectious disease in the elementary schools
was considerably less in 1937 than in the previous year, so far as
numbers of cases were concerned. 519 cases were notified in 1937
as compared with 889 in 1936.

The following table gives the numbers of cases of the different infectious diseases notified from the elementary schools in 1937 and 1936.

It will be seen that the most prevalent infection in 1937 was
mumps, 172 cases as against only 39 in the previous year. This
disease was most prevalent in the first and last quarters of the year.
Of the 146 cases of whooping cough, 110 occurred in the first quarter
of the year. The incidence of scarlet fever was again low, just as
in 1936, and of diphtheria very low, 24 cases only as compared
with 62 in 1936.
