The incidence of scarlet fever and diphtheria, so far as school attendance is concerned, was as follows:—

Scarlet Fever.
Only 72 cases of scarlet fever were notified during the year,
as compared with 98 in 1936. The disease was fairly evenly distributed
over the year and throughout the district, the largest
number of cases being notified in the last quarter. It was for the
most part of a mild type, but one death occurred in a child under
school age. Of the 72 cases notified, 64 were admitted to hospital.
Diphtheria.
Diphtheria was not nearly so prevalent in 1937 as in the previous
year, the number of notifications received being only 46, as
compared with 99 in 1936. Of the cases notified, all except one,
were admitted to hospital. The disease was for the most part of a
moderately severe type, and two deaths occurred. Another death
was certified as due to diphtheria, the patient in this case dying in
a General Hospital of diabetes which was said to be complicated by
diphtheria.
