fillings to 464 extractions. In the case of the temporary teeth, on
the other hand, it is found best to devote much less time to fillings,
the number of which is negligible compared with that of extractions.
(f) Defects of Speech.
The Speech Defect Clinic deals with children suffering from
stammering and other defects of speech. Two classes are held each
week, one for children of twelve years and over and the other for
children under twelve. The classes are limited to eight children
each, so that individual attention may be given. Improvement is
necessarily slow, but very good results are obtained, and in a
considerable proportion of the cases dealt with complete cure is
obtained.
8.—INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The incidence of infectious disease in the elementary schools
was not so severe in 1935 as in the previous year, the total number
of cases notified to me being 864 as compared with 1,064 in 1934.

The following table gives the numbers of the different infectious diseases notified from the elementary schools:—

Scarlet Fever103
Diphtheria20
Chickenpox138
Measles82
Mumps361
Whooping Cough150
Skin Infections10
Total864

It will be seen that mumps was responsible for more than
40 per cent. of all the infectious cases. This disease was particularly
prevalent in the second quarter of the year, 267 cases in all being
reported in that quarter. Scarlet fever was prevalent in the district
throughout the whole year, but more cases occurred in the first
quarter than in any of the others. The incidence of diphtheria
was low, only twenty cases occurring in children of school age.
