Our low birth-rate—the smallest on record—is not altogether
to be deplored. What we are losing in quantity is being made up
in quality, for it is much more desirable that a few healthy children
are born than a number of weaklings who, not only are a misery to
themselves, but a burden on society. It is estimated that, on the
average, every child born this year has an expectancy of life 12
years longer than its grandfather.

The following are the number of illegitimate births and the illegitimate birth-rate for the five years 1921 to 1925 inclusive:—

DEATHS.
There were 286 deaths registered within the District during
the year 1925. There were also 221 residents who died outside the
District, making a total of 507.
The annual death-rate for Wood Green was 9.75 per 1,000 of
the population, as compared with 9.89 in 1924.
The annual death-rate for the 105 great towns for the same
period was 12.2.
